For the 1st time Uncool College Parent: Congratulations! You made it through the college application and acceptance merry go round. Take a deep breath and congratulate your child on a job well done and then congratulate yourself!
Whether they got in early decision or it took right up until the last possible day to make a choice it has been hard on you, their parent, as well. Now that the decision has been made and school and housing deposits are in, just make sure that they finish their senior year in a good way. You may want to suggest, if they haven’t done it already, that your child join a group on Facebook for their college. That way they can meet and connect (at least online) with other kids who they will be with in the fall. Some kids even meet prospective friends in central places so that they can help ease their transition in the fall.
Final Exams are coming up quickly – send those survival packages!
As a reformed helicopter parent I find it very difficult at the end of each semester when I know that my kid is stressed out. When they were in high school I might have helped them organize their time, provided snacks, and supported them in other little ways.
It’s amazing how three weeks a year the country is gripped by March Madness.
We here at Uncool College Parent are no different. We have been glued to the TV and can recite the names of the players and coaches like they are our family. We are talking about busting brackets and three pointers. What a great way to communicate with our kids that is easy and fun! Whether you are rooting for North Carolina, Syracuse, Oklahoma or Villanova, it is a great equalizer between a parent and a child. It’s not too late to get into the action – this weekend we are looking forward to the Final Four. So start calling and texting your kid. Let’s just enjoy that easy feeling of communication when the conversation just starts flowing.
