As a reformed helicopter parent I find it very difficult at the end of each semester when I know that my kid is stressed out. When they were in high school I might have helped them organize their time, provided snacks, and supported them in other little ways.

March Madness

It’s amazing how three weeks a year the country is gripped by March Madness.

We here at Uncool College Parent are no different. We have been glued to the TV and can recite the names of the players and coaches like they are our family. We are talking about busting brackets and three pointers. What a great way to communicate with our kids that is easy and fun! Whether you are rooting for North Carolina, Syracuse, Oklahoma or Villanova, it is a great equalizer between a parent and a child. It’s not too late to get into the action – this weekend we are looking forward to the Final Four. So start calling and texting your kid. Let’s just enjoy that easy feeling of communication when the conversation just starts flowing.

Spring Break – It’s Not a Vacation for Us

I don’t know which is worse for a parent -having your child go on a vacation
with friends for Spring Break or having him or her come home. 

On one hand I spend their week away worrying about all the possible scenarios that could happen on a vacation and every possible thing that can go wrong. Bonfire on the beach? A race to the hospital for burns.  Learning how to trapeze? A fall and an injury requiring medical attention.

On the other hand, having my kid come home doesn’t feel much better. Now I have to negotiate with someone who has been on their own at school and used to their own timetable. I’m looking at a closed bedroom door until 2:00 pm -apparently the usual time to wake up. I’m trying to sleep at 2:00 am, wondering when I will hear the door open.
